The Holburne Museum extension

The Holburne Museum of Art has appointed a new director, Jennifer Scott.

New children’s play equipment

Play equipment

The children’s play area in Sydney Gardens has received a new piece of equipment. The old carousel was replaced this week by a rotating cone climber.

“We are looking forward to Sydney Gardens being restored with our lottery project,” said Cllr Nicholas Coombes. “However, in the short term we need to keep the park up to scratch. That’s why David Martin and I have asked for equipment like this to be installed, which can be re-used in the future.”

Holburne Christmas light show begins

Holburne lights

The Holburne Museum has switched on its seasonal light show. This is the third year since reopening that the museum has installed a light show in its grounds over the Christmas period.

This year, the museum itself plays a greater part in the experience, as the extension is lit up by dozens of lamps, pulsing and changing colours. The reflective surface of the ceramic responds in unexpected ways, glowing and sparkling.

The lights are free to view from the cafe, but to complete the experience, hire headphones to listen to a specially composed soundtrack to which the lights dance. The lights are switched on at 4pm every evening until 5 January.

The Chronicle has an album of photos, and amateur photographers have shared some of theirs from the Holburne twitter feed.

School expansion raised at Council

St Marys Primary

Bathwick councillor Nicholas Coombes has raised the need for expansion of St Mary’s Primary School at a meeting of the council. He asked how BathNES council was supporting governors in their wish to expand.

The school has an excellent reputation and is consequently oversubscribed with huge demand for places. An increased birth rate in this part of the city means that demand will soon rise further, and the proposed housing development on the MoD site will also contribute to the need for places.

The Council has undertaken a feasibility study about doubling the size of the school to allow for two classes at each year group. This involves using part of the bordering MoD site for expansion, which could also provide playing fields for the first time.

Your local Liberal Democrat councillors strongly support expanding the school so that children living in Bathwick can attend their local primary. Nicholas and David will continue to work to ensure that this opportunity is not missed.

New Warminster Road pedestrian crossing consultation

warminster rd crossing proposal

New plans for a pedestrian crossing over Warminster Road have been published for consultation.

One hundred local residents signed a petition for a safer crossing, which Dr David Martin presented to BathNES Council in 2010. Funding was allocated by the Liberal Democrats on the council for this year, and a scheme was publicised in March. However, a number of objections were received about the loss of parking at the rear of St Mary’s School.

The revised plan is for a pedestrian island between the back gates of St Mary’s School and the footpath from St Christopher’s Close. This would make it safer for residents of the Minster Way estate to take their children to school, or to walk further into town.

Comments on the proposal, included in the picture above, should be made to transportantion@bathnes.gov.uk by 9th September, quoting TC8428/TRO.

Progress for Warminster Road school crossing

David Martin inspects the school crossing site

A safer crossing outside Bathwick St Mary’s Primary is expected to be built within weeks.

Local Liberal Democrat councillors collected a petition for the crossing which was accepted by BathNES Council. The works have been budgeted for this year and should be built in March or April.

A formal consultation has been published over the parking changes necessary for a safer crossing. This will close on 21st March and, assuming no objections are made, work should start immediately afterwards.

A pedestrian island will be built between the footpath from St Christopher’s Close and the back gates of the school. The markings for school buses will be moved and a few parking spaces cancelled to ensure that children using the crossing are visible and safe.
