Bathwick couple film Burmese elephants

Oozies and Elephant

A documentary by a Bathwick couple has been selected for the Bath Film Festival. The premier is on Sunday 1st December from 4pm at the Chapel Arts.

Of Oozies and Elephants‘ is a 90 minute documentary filmed entirely in Myanmar, Burma. Filming took place over two years by just two individuals and their hand-held cameras.

Oozies are the head-riders, the men who work with elephants to log forests. Logging in this way not only saves forests but may save the endangered Asian elephant from extinction.

Tickets available on Friday 25th Oct by signing up for the Bath Film Festival newsletter for priority booking, or from Friday 1st November from bathfilmfestival.org.uk or www.bathboxoffice.org; Tel 01225 463 3362 Mon-Sat 9.30-5.30.

Happy New Year

Nicholas Coombes and David Martin

Happy new year to all!

January 2013 also marks five years of this blog.

In this time there have been 335 posts, averaging just over one a week. The most commented were on the Sydney Gardens rail fence and the Lib Dems’ by-election victory in Radstock.

For those of you interested in city-wide issues, many of these are covered on our website www.bathneslibdems.org.uk which also aggregates stories from other local blogs like this. Don Foster MP writes at www.donfoster.co.uk. For national stories by or affecting the Liberal Democrats, my favourite source is www.libdemvoice.org.

Thank you for reading and best wishes for the new year.

Email updates from your councillors

David Martin and Nicholas Coombes

Bathwick’s Liberal Democrat councillors produce a regular email of local news and information.

The e-news is sent to hundreds of residents every two months. Like this website and regular Focus leaflets, it is intended to keep you up to date with local issues and campaigns and informed about the work of your local councillors.

To join the mailing list, please email bathwick_libdems@yahoo.com

Funding for local projects

Handrail at Darlington Place steps Recycling bin Pulteney Rd Cycle stands at the Holburne

Bathwick’s Liberal Democrat councillors are able to support small community projects.

The Ward Councillors Initiative provides a devolved budget to all councillors for one-off items in their area. Your councillors have previously funded the recycling bins in Bathwick, re-surfacing the canal towpath, the Darlington steps handrail, cycle stands at the Holburne and restoration in Smallcombe Cemetery.

If you have a community project or idea in need of funding, please contact your local councillors.

Jubilee Planning

Cleveland Walk street party

After last year’s Royal Wedding street parties, there are already plans circulating to mark the Queen’s diamond jubilee.

BathNES Council has published a page of advice for street party organisers here, which is based on the new events policy to make community events easier to organise.

While the Queen visited a school in Norfolk to mark 60 years on the throne, events nationwide and here in BathNES are taking shape.

If you are planning a street party then please do use the resources available and give the council plenty of notice if you want to close a road. Also, let your local councillors know and we’ll advertise it on this website.

New businesses welcomed to Bathwick Parade

Bathwick Parade

For the first time in years, there is activity in every shop on Bathwick Parade.

Redlands Equestrian have moved into the old Threshers shop at the bottom of the parade. Their business organises holidays with horses.

Take Charge Bikes are now rennovating the former hairdressers nextdoor. They sell electric bicycles and are moving from Lansdown.

Myrtle Mee florists remain in the middle of the parade, and finally work is underway to clear out Bathwick Hill Stores.

Welcome to our new arrivals and good luck in your new premises.

Holburne re-opens

The Holburne Museum extension

This weekend the Holburne Museum re-opens after restoration and extension.

The modern extension has receieved almost universal praise locally and nationally. However, it wasn’t always the case. I am very proud to have supported the museum through all three of their planning applications. Indeed, speaking as ward member to the original planning meeting was my first speech as a councillor.

Entry is now free to the museum, with a charge for exhibitions. Details are at www.holburne.org.uk; please do enjoy our local museum.

Claverton Down Community Hall Valentine’s dance

Dr David Martin at Claverton Down Community Hall

The Claverton Down Community Hall Valentine’s dance is on Saturday 12th February, from 7:30 to 11:30pm. Tickets are £8 available from Peter Marsden on 466610. There will be music from the Dave Parker duo and a light supper; bring your own drinks and glasses.

The community hall has it’s own website at www.clavertondown.org.uk; David Martin is a committee member of the hall.

If you would like your community event published on the website please email nicholas_coombes@bathnes.gov.uk; already there are rumours of Spring street parties!

University post office to move

Don Foster MP at the University post boxes

The Post Office at the university moves 25m down the parade this week.

The branch in Fresh closed on Tuesday and will reopen in its new unit on Monday 28th. Opening hours will be 9-17:30 Monday to Friday with a half hour break from 11:15 on Wednesdays.

Intriguingly the Post Office official consultation period remains open until July 7th, so you may object to prevent the move up to 10 days after it actually happens!
