Roadworks move to roundabout – 19-23rd September

Bathwick Hill roadworks

The lower part of Bathwick Hill has now been resurfaced and re-lined.

The work has been finished on time as part of a wider programme of road repairs being undertaken by the Liberal Democrat B&NES Council.

Next is the roundabout at Bathwick Hill / Pulteney Road. Work will be carried out overnight between 19th and 23rd September. There will be full or partial closures between 7pm and 7am the next morning.

Bus diversion ends

bus diversion

For the past week Bathwick Hill has been closed for resurfacing.

Buses have been re-routed along Cleveland Walk and North Road. In 2008 B&NES Council was forced to apologise after leaving passengers standed at temporarily closed bus stops. At Cllr Nicholas Coombes’ insistence new procedures were put in place. This time around notices were placed on all bus stops along the affected stretch and thusfar no problems have some to light.

Bathwick Hill closed 12th-16th September

Bathwick Hill will be closed between 7am and 7pm every day of the week starting 12th September. The lower stretch will be completely restructured to repair recent weather damage.

The road will be closed between the roundabout and Sydney Buildings for five days until Friday 16th. It will also be closed for the evenings/nights of the following week 19th-24th between 7pm and 7am.

Traffic and buses will be diverted along Cleveland Walk and North road for the duration of the closures. While the diversion is in place there will be no bus service to stops between Cleveland Walk and Pulteney Road.

Local councillor Nicholas Coombes has made sure that notices have been attached to each bus stop affected, to avoid the problems of 2008. He has also ensured that the closure takes place outside of University term time to minimise disruption to bus services and congestion.

Bathwick Hill, North Road and Darlington Road will be resurfaced shortly by the newly Liberal Democrat B&NES Council.

Darlington Road, leading to Bathwick St. Mary’s Primary School will be first, over the 17th and 18th September. The middle of North Road will also be done during the school holidays, with closure between 17th and 19th.

The reconstruction of the lower reaches of Bathwick Hil has been rearranged at the request of your local councillors to avoid the heavy traffic of the University terms. It is now expected to be closed for five days in early September. The surface has badly deteriorated in recent years and is in need of conprehensive resurfacing and reconstruction.

While the hill is closed between Sydney Buildings and the roundabout traffic and buses will be diverted via Cleveland Walk and North Road. There will be no service to bus stops downhill of Cleveland Walk for the duration of the closure.

Handrail installed for Darlington Steps

Cllr Nicholas Coombes at the Darlington Place steps

A handrail funded by Cllr Nicholas Coombes has been installed on the Darlington Place steps.

Nicholas has funded the handrail from his devolved funding for local projects in response to local concerns about the footpath. In poor weather, and especially during the icy winter, the steep path is difficult to traverse.

The handrail has been specially made by the local Kelston Forge to a traditional design in keeping with the area.

New path for bus stop

Oakley bus path

Bus passengers have a new pavement thanks to Cllr Nicholas Coombes.

The bus stop at the top of Bathwick Hill which serves North Road, Copseland, The Avenue and the University is used by both standard and bendy buses. Previously passengers alighting from the rear of the bendy buses did so into grass or mud.

The new stretch of pavement was requested by Cllr Coombes a few months ago and has recently been completed.

The new Liberal Democrat council will be resurfacing several stretches of road in Bathwick this Summer.

Darlington Road, outside St Mary’s Primary School, will be re-surfaced over the school holidays, as will a stretch of North Road uphill from Cleveland Walk. In both cases the road will be closed for about a week in August.

Bathwick Hill, from Sydney Buildings to the roundabout ,is due considerable work and was set to be closed in October, but your councillors have asked for this to be moved to fit university holidays and avoid unnecessary disruption.

Canal bank repairs

Canal bank repairs

British Waterways are to repair the banks of the canal upstream of Bathwick Hill.

The bank to the turning pool has been eroded and the towpath is now crumbling into the water. A very specific ‘hand-brake turn’ is required to turn a narrow boat on this section of the canal and it is often done incorrectly, resulting in damage to the bank.

Piling will be installed to protect the bank and allow the towpath to be rebuilt.

Bathwick Hill to be resurfaced

Cllr Armand Edwards inspects a temporary pothole fill

Bathwick has done well in this year’s road works plan.

Bathwick Hill will be ‘reconstructed’ and it is proposed to resurface North Road, Widcombe Hill and Darlington Road. The plans have been presented for cabinet approval; the full scope of the works will become clear later. They are part of the Structural Maintenance Capital Programme 2011/12.

Street lights on Oakley and Bathwick Hill are also promised an upgrade, like the ones one Claverton Down and Widcombe Hill installed recently.
